What to Check Before Hiring a Site Engineer

A short checklist for contractors and project managers to reduce the risk of a poor technical hire.

Why site engineer hires go wrong

Most unsuccessful hires come down to a mismatch between what the role needs and what the person has done before — not a lack of qualifications.

A practical checklist

  • Relevant project types and values they have worked on
  • Hands-on setting-out and levelling experience
  • Familiarity with drawings, RFIs, quality records and temporary works
  • Required tickets and site safety training
  • Availability, notice period and commute to your site
  • References from site managers or project engineers they reported to

Use a technical conversation

A short technical discussion or site walk with your project engineer often reveals more than a formal interview. Ask how they would approach a real problem from your current job.
